CALLUM Davidson's season is over and it looks as though Nathan Blake is also going to be forced to sit out Blackburn Rovers' final two matches against Crystal Palace and Manchester City.

Both players, injured in the Easter weekend fixtures, have been sent for scans to determine the full extent of the problems.

But Davidson, who collapsed after going over on his ankle during Monday's draw with First Division champions Charlton and had to be stretchered off, is thought to have suffered damage to the tendons.

Instead of being on duty with Scotland in Holland this evening, the full back left Ewood on crutches last night after watching the reserves play Newcastle.

The Ewood medical staff expect him to be sidelined for something like four to six weeks, well beyond the end of the season -- though they will wait for the results of the scan before making any official verdict. Blake's Achilles tendon injury, collected in the first half at Grimsby on Saturday, is not thought to be as bad.

But he will almost certainly be ruled out of Saturday's game at Palace and the final match against City on Sunday week is also likely to come too soon for the Welsh international.

So both men will have to hope they have already made a good enough impression on manager Graeme Souness to be included in his plans before he embarks on a recruitment campaign -- as well as looking to offload some players -- during the summer.

There needs to be some quick action in the transfer market at the end of the season if Rovers are to have any chance at all of selling a significant number of season tickets. Many fans have been disillusioned by what they have seen this season in the Nationwide League First Division and they are going to be looking for positive signs from the club that things are really going to change under the new manager next term.

New signings will play a major role in that.

Although he has lost Davidson and Blake from his plans for the finale, Souness will have been encouraged by the fact that Marlon Broomes bounced back from his knee injury to play the full 90 minutes at Ewood last night.

And the central defender gave a good account of himself.

Broomes has been unlucky with injuries throughout his Ewood career, seeming to pick up a problem just when he is establishing himself. Whether he gets another chance in the last two matches remains to be seen. So far, the manager appears to favour the experienced pairing of Christian Dailly and Craig Short in the centre of defence.

But the more faces available for selection the better.

There was also good news for Billy McKinlay last night as he completed 90 minutes, to go with the half a game he had last week.

And the fans enjoyed seeing the old competitive McKinlay in action. He was involved in one or two minor confrontations, picked up a booking and tackled with plenty of relish.

It's unlikely he will play first team football this season, after so long on the sidelines. But if the Scot can work through the summer and be ready for the start of next season, that will be a bonus.
