STAFF were in tears when they saw the fire damage caused in an arson attack on Stoneyholme Primary School, Burnley.
"Everyone was naturally upset and there were some tears when staff saw the damage for the first time," said headteacher Colin Wills.
Four classrooms in the infants' section were destroyed or severely damaged in the attack late on Friday afternoon.
Mr Wills described it as a total disaster and scene of devastation.
Firefighters contained the blaze to one of the four separate but linked buildings at the Oswald Street school.
Staff turned up this week to help clearing up operations and to get the school ready for classes on Tuesday after the Easter and May Day break.
Investigations found that the school was broken before the fire.
Mr Wills said 10 classes would be able to start as normal on Tuesday but it was not known how long it was going to be before accommodation could be arranged for the reception and year one classes.
He added: "There is only so much we can do, at the moment we are busy compiling lists of things that were lost for insurance and replacement purposes.
"Members of staff have been very good and governors have been helping as well."
Police inquiries are continuing and anyone with information is asked to ring Burnley CID on 01282 425001 or contact Crimestoppers in anonymity on 0800 555111.
