BBC Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq is hosting what claims to be the UK's first official independent MP3 chart.
Net users are asked to vote for songs in the Clickmusic chart, compiled from artists on all the major UK MP3 sites with legally downloadable tracks.
Steve said: "MP3s are still finding their place in the music industry -- but people are taking them more and more seriously now. The only problem is, with the weight of material going on-line every day, you need a little help sorting out the good from the bad. That's what me and the team will be trying to do. We're trying to give fans a shortcut to the more interesting new demos that are out there."
Steve Lamacq is also writing a weekly column and running a bulletin board and posting topics for discussion on alternative music and dance issues on the site.
He said: "We'll be covering all sorts of topics, from practical questions about the
music industry to enquiries about new bands. I see it as a good place for people to be able swap information."
