West Bromwich Albion Reserves 0 Burnley Reserves 0
GOALKEEPER Craig Mawson pulled off a cracking second half save last night to ensure Burnley reserves completed their league programme with a battling draw at the Hawthorns.
Albion looked set to steal all three points as striker James Fox pulled the trigger from just six yards out but the Clarets keeper made a stunning point-blank stop to earn his team a point.
That was the highlight of a scrappy game which was ruined by a freak thunderstorm 10 mins before kick-off that turned the pitch into a quagmire.
Nevertheless, it was still a valuable exercise for the Clarets who took the chance to look at trialist Gary Dempsey.
First team squad members Tom Cowan and Gerry Harrison were also given a run out and Cowan in particular looked impressive against Albion dangerman Max Iezzi.
It was the visitors who adapted quicker to the conditions and Harrison could have broken the deadlock on 16 minutes but he fired narrowly wide.
Then Anthony Shandran escaped the clutches of the Albion defence but keeper Chris Adamson pulled off a terrific save.
The home side's best chance of the half fell to Justin Richards but he somehow headed wide with only Mawson to beat. As conditions deteriorated after the break, both sides struggled to engineer much in terms of clear cut opportunities.
Burnley: Mawson, Leeson, Cowan, Scott, Heywood, Kevan, Maylett (Barrett), Harrison, Shandran, Dempsey (O'Neill), Devenney. Subs not used: Davis, Paxton, Bowden.
