MOBILE phone masts have got health-conscious locals up-in-arms.
At Culcheth irate residents have called a public meeting on May 15 to discuss the Tanner's Farm mast near homes off Twiss Green Lane.
And in Leigh people living near a site earmarked for a telecommunications pole are demanding answers to health and property questions.
But the Federation of Electronics Industries, which represents Britain's mobile phone companies, claims there is scientific evidence which shows properly sited masts don't have adverse health affects.
A big turnout is expected at Culcheth where residents have been campaigning to get rid of a Vodaphone mast sited within 100 yards of homes. The meeting venue has yet to be decided.
Residents say the mast is a health risk and an eyesore which could affect resale value of properties.
Objectors include people who recently moved in to homes on the Newchurch Hospital site.
One of them, Carol Jones of Newlands Mews, is particularly concerned.
Remedial massage therapist Carol, who has a practice in the village, says: "My 13 year-old daughter Kirsty attends a special needs school and must stay clear of microwave ovens and such things.
"What adverse affect is this mast having on her? "I chose our home for safety reasons because it is well away from any main road. I never thought a mast would appear as happened in January.
"We hear all sorts of things about health dangers -- they can't all be wrong.
"They said Sellafield wouldn't pose a hazard didn't they?
"We want this mast removed."
In Leigh concerns have been raised over plans to site a 15m communications pole at the rear of 185 Manchester Road.
Locals worried about health matters are in contact with council planners over the proposal.
