THE new season got underway at Ruberoid Sutton Cricket Club this weekend with matches against Liverpool Nalgo. The First XI were away at Nalgo and after a long delay for rain went out to bat on a rain soaked pitch. Sutton had made 69-4 thanks to some big hitting by professional, Mukerjhee, who made 44 not out.
At this point the rain came down again so skipper Ian Greener bravely declared. Despite having 27 overs to bat, Nalgo were cautious and some excellent bowling from Mukerjhee with 5-14 and Ray Foster 3-23 meant that the game finished in a draw with Nalgo finishing on 39-8.
This was a very positive performance in which Sutton were unlucky not to gain maximum points.
The Second XI played at New Street and again in a match that only started at 5pm Sutton batted first. Batting was not easy on another rain soaked wicket and Sutton batted for 29 overs to make 83-7 with newcomer Andy Henderson making 29 not out. Nalgo were never going well and thanks to some good bowling from Rimmer, Laithwaite and captain Mark Reynolds finished on 44-7 after 26 overs. A good performance in the field almost gave Sutton victory.
This weekend Sutton play games against St Asaph. Sutton wish to thank their club sponsor Ruberoid for their continued support.
