THE correspondent signed "A Working (if not perfect) Christian" (Apr 21) makes a personal attack on Fr. Hailes instead of writing about the issues and problems at Holy Trinity Church, Bury.

A parish priest should always be concerned about current issues and the circumstances in which he lives and ministers, and should denounce what he considers to be evil. The man who was injured when he intervened in the stone-throwing incident is still in hospital and uncertain whether or not his sight will be restored. He is paying the price of pseudo-tolerance.

I offer two quotes from Edmund Burke:

(1) "There is a limit at which forbearance ceases to be a virtue";

(2) "For the triumph of evil it is only necessary that good men do nothing".

Are we to drift into anarchy through continually excusing yobbish behaviour? Boredom is no excuse!
