BURNLEY will become a Sunday opening shopping centre from tomorrow, with many more retailers agreeing to push up the shutters and welcome visitors.

The new initiative follows a retail report on the link between shopping and leisure and a survey which saw two thirds of retailers agreeing to open Sundays, with most opting for noon until 4pm opening.

Some shops, such as Woolworth and Argus had opened Sundays for some time, says assistant town centre manager Lisa Durkin, but now many major retailers in the Charter Walk centre and St James Street will join them.

Marks and Spencer and various travel agents will not, however, open initially, nor will Burnley Market.

Most car parks are open free of charge, but the cost at the new millennium car park will be 50p all day.

Said Lisa: "By not opening on Sundays, people are spending their money elsewhere.

"We are hoping this new seven-day trading will offer people more flexibility and will keep the money and shoppers in Burnley."
