WOODLAND paths where dangerous nail traps and pieces of wood spiked with nails were found have been reopened -- but North West Water has issued a warning to visitors to report anything suspicious.
Walkers in Roddlesworth Woods, in Tockholes, near Darwen, must be on their guard because traps may have been planted in thick mud along pathways.
The water company, which owns the land, is helping the police with their inquiries and believes that the traps could have been laid by someone with a grudge against mountain bikers.
Ian Walker, NWW woodland project officer, said: "The laying of these nail traps was a ridiculous and dangerous act and we will be working with police to try and catch the perpetrator and prevent any similar occurrence in the future.
"Most riders are aware that they should not cycle on footpaths, but stick to bridleways and concessionary tracks where they are allowed.
"By doing so, it avoids conflict with other users, particularly walkers and, as well as protecting paths from unnecessary erosion, it is a major boost to safety."
Anyone who sees anything suspicious should call Darwen police on 01254 701777.
