ANDY Payton slipped one toe into the Second Division's golden boot with a match-winning brace to take his League goal-scoring tally for the season to 27.

The deadly Clarets striker is keen to end the season as the division's top marksman.

But promotion is his number one priority and his two first-half goals saw off Cambridge to keep that target in sight with one game to go.

"I suppose we couldn't have done any more. We got three points, which is all we could ask for, and we just want to get three points next week and forget about anyone else," Payton said.

"I think we thoroughly deserved it in the first half. It was like wave after wave of attack.

"And then we got one goal and then another one -- when Cookie was unlucky to hit the post and I had a tap-in -- and we were cruising really.

"But forget the game, we were just happy with the three points."

Payton ended a five-game wait for a goal with a classic strike 14 minutes into Burnley's last scheduled home game of the campaign.

And his second 18 minutes later virtually guaranteed a victory that lifted Stan Ternent's men to second in the table.

Only Gillingham can catch them if the Clarets can chalk up a seventh win in eight games at Scunthorpe next Saturday. Payton added: "I can't reiterate enough that it's just the three points that we are interested in at this stage of the season, that's all that matters.

"If we can get three points next week then we will have done our bit really and what will be will be.

"We've just been trying to win every game and keep ourselves going, especially after the set-back against Gillingham and we've come back and won every game since.

"We just want to win next week -- and it won't be easy -- and if we can do that, what will be will be."

Cambridge boss Roy McFarland felt the move for Burnley's opening goal should have been nipped in the bud by referee Mark Warren, but took his hat off to the quality of Payton's finishing

"It was a foul on half-way on Scott Eustace but the referee didn't see that and the next thing we know the ball's in the back of our net. But it was a great bit of skill in the 18-yard box from Andy Payton.

"All the games will be decided on who takes their chances. Burnley took theirs and we didn't," he said.
