GLORY-HUNTING Burnley have guaranteed a play-off place and key men Steve Davis and Glen Little have both been named in the PFA's Second Division team of the season.

But the biggest prize of all still awaits as they prepare to travel to Scunthorpe United next Saturday knowing that automatic promotion is still on the cards.

The Clarets' 2-0 win over Cambridge on Saturday, thanks to two more goals from Andy Payton, allied to Wigan's home defeat by Wrexham means that Burnley will go up if they win at Glanford Park and Gillingham drop points to either Cardiff tomorrow night or Wrexham on Saturday.

Manager Stan Ternent briefly savoured the achievement of securing a top-six spot but is focussed on winning next Saturday to pile the pressure on the Gills.

"The play-offs gives us a second chance and it would be great for the fans and everybody. But we would like to win the game next week and if we could get an automatic promotion that would be lovely," he said.

The Clarets, however, need one of the Welsh clubs to do them a favour against Gillingham.

"That would be nice if they could see it in themselves to beat them. But that doesn't alter the fact that we've got a mega-game," added Ternent.

"The season's boiled down, as I predicted it would, to the last game because it's a very tight division.

"So Saturday's the biggest game of our season, but that's been the case all the way for all the teams that are up there. "I think you've got to take your hat off to the players. They've shown tremendous resilience and character and they've never been found wanting."

And the Clarets boss insisted he would rather be in Burnley's position than Gillingham's.

"If we win that means Gillingham have to win two games. I would rather have points in the bag.

"We will prepare well for Scunthorpe on Saturday, which will be a difficult game, but if we win it means Gillingham will have to win two.

"I would rather be in our situtation at this stage," he said.

For the second season running Davis, outstanding in defence again on Saturday, was named in the PFA side, while for winger Little it was a first.

Remarkably, Payton didn't get the vote from his fellow professionals despite topping the scoring charts with a personal best tally of 27 League goals.

Ternent expressed his surprise at that decision but applauded his two players who were named in the select line-up, which featured Preston's Jonathan Macken and Jason Roberts of Bristol Rovers as the front men.

"They've done exceptionally well this season and it's great for them to be in. It reflects well on them and the club," he added. The Clarets will show their crucial last scheduled game of the season at Scunthorpe live on a big screen at Turf Moor next Saturday.

Victory for Burnley could take them up to Division One depending on how Gillingham fare in their last two fixtures this week.

And with the 2,092 tickets for away fans quickly selling out, the club has confirmed its decision to relay live pictures of the Glanford Park clash.

Some 7,000 tickets, priced £5 across the board, will be available for the James Hargreaves North Stand and will go on sale on a first-come-first served basis on Wednesday. Any remaining tickets will go on sale on the day of the game from the stand turnstiles.

"We want to give every opportunity to our supporters to see the final game of the season at Scunthorpe United and the only way for the majority to see the game is for us to provide a live screening of the match.

"I believe the fans will respond and turn up in their numbers for what promises to be a crucial day in the football calendar," said general manager Andrew Watson.
