DARING Rossendale mayoress Janet Neal was one of the first to have a go on the army "death slide" (see picture) at the annual charity fun day.
She was told to remove her chain of office by her chauffeur before being allowed to take her turn on the aerial ride.
Afterwards she said: "The soldier who strapped me on told me not to look down. But of course I did and the ground seemed a long way down.
"I said he would have to push me off the platform and he did as I stepped off. I have done it but I wont do it again."
The mayoress arrived at the Newhallhey playing fields in style in a Rolls-Royce - part of a 50 vehicle parade of classic cars which travelled from Marl Pits sports field.
Thousands joined her in the sunshine helping to raise money for cancer charities and local organisations.
Attractions included a fairground, Fire and Rescue Service, majorettes, charity stalls, Britannia Coconutters, rides and Circus Sensible workshops in juggling and stilt-walking for the youngsters.
There were also events at the nearby station site.
Musical entertainment was provided for all tastes including the Whiskey Chorus Irish band and Janine Hey of Haslingden who took off Alison Moyet in the TV talent show Stars in their Eyes.
The mayoresses commented: "It has been a good day with entertainment for everyone and the weather has been just the tonic."
