WHEN Arthur Smith became organist at Christ Church, Walmersley, King George V was on the throne, Bury Town Hall had yet to be built and trams trundled the streets.
That was 1935 and six-and-a-half decades years later, Arthur is still playing!
He plays at services every Sunday and also attends weedings, funerals and other events throughout the year.
"I must have played about 35,000 hymns," said Arthur, who first began playing as a young boy in Sunday School.
To celebrate Arthur's remarkable ahievement, choir members have organised an evening of celebration, in the church at 6.30pm on Sunday, May 21.
Everyone is welcome to join them, especially choristers who have been in the choir at any time during those 65 years.
Anyone who is able to attend is asked to phone Mr John Clegg on 764 1517.
