PRESTON proved yet again how contentious local elections can be with the Tories coming up smelling of 'blue' roses.
One of the shock defeats was Labour councillor Valerie Wise, daughter of veteran Preston MP Audrey, who lost the Tulketh ward seat by 28 votes to Tory candidate Constance McManus.
In a night of mixed feelings for all parties, the Conservatives came out on top by winning four seats -- which means they hold 17 within the council. Labour lost four seats -- now 24 -- Liberal Democrats won two seats yet lost one. Labour Independents gained one, with the People's Party losing one.
Yet, the turn-out within the Preston borough was depressingly low with only a quarter of the electorate bothering to vote.
