RECYCLING is obviously becoming more and more necessary if we are to avoid other less environmentally friendly and expensive means of dealing with waste.
Lancaster, south of the river is mainly covered by the Green Box scheme with the exception of the Primrose and Moorlands areas.
These two areas would seem to be ideal for collection, containing terraced streets within a relatively small area. As councillors for the area we constantly receive letters from people who are "keen to be green" asking why Primrose and Moorlands cannot join the scheme.
We have asked these questions at the last two council meetings and we were told that some people are not using their green boxes and will have them removed. We feel that it will not be economic to give out these boxes in a piecemeal way.
We are told that there is to be a discussion with Lancashire Waste in two weeks time about recycling and we will hear about this. We will be waiting for a satisfactory reply and informing our residents accordingly.
We also noted that the local recycling sites were overflowing over the Easter period. The site on Hala Green was particularly bad. If people are to be encouraged to recycle waste, these bins need emptying regularly, especially before a holiday period.
We were also warned by Morecambe Bay Independent chairman of environmental and public services policy committee that the days of free plastic sacks are soon to be over. Again we will wait to see what is being suggested, but we feel that we must encourage clean cheap collection of waste for the sake of our environment.
