LAST week I wrote to the council regarding horse-riders leaving horse droppings on Morecambe beach -- I have not received a reply.
I would also like to know what action the council intends to take over the amount of bottles and broken glass mainly from alcoholic drinks irresponsibly discarded by humans who obviously have no respect for the safety of either children or public enemy No1, the canines!
The first step the council should impose is the removal of all outside seating from all establishments along the promenade selling alcohol until there is an assurance by the proprietors that all glass articles will remain within the vicinity of their establishment. The council should enforce this, and perhaps employ 'broken glass and bottle wardens' to patrol the seafront at night to ensure that the following morning the promenade and beaches are safe for our children and canines to walk on.
This may sound a bit extreme but not when one considers the actions that have been taken already by the council by employing two extra dog wardens to keep public enemy No1, the dog, from enjoying parts of our beaches. It is about time the council was made to take full and appropriate responsibility for the state of our beaches, rather than making the dog the scapegoat.
The harm caused by irresponsible humans to our promenade and beaches is deplorable. This is exacerbated by what arrives in the estuary, and as a consequence on the beach, as a result of what is pumped into the Lune by the reportedly 7th worst polluter in the UK - Acordis Acetates. The council should concentrate their efforts on cleaning up the beaches then we'd discover who the real culprits are. It certainly isn't our dogs.
