Morecambe 2 Scarborough 0
MORECAMBE are hoping for a bumper crowd for their final match of the season at Christie Park on Saturday, to celebrate their best ever league position.
It is a fantastic result for the Shrimps as this season which ironically included their worst and best runs.
Monday saw the Shrimps triumph over Scarborough in their last away match this season. ,They have now played 16 games without defeat.
The team played superbly with heroes John Norman and Justin Jackson skilfully setting up some excellent openings.
Jackson, determined it seems to end the season with 30 league goals, applied the pressure from the start and Scarborough's goalie Andy Woods was kept on his toes. Even though the Scarborough goal saw most of the action, it appeared the home side would take the lead after 20 minutes as Darren Roberts cunningly dodged defenders to fire in a shot, luckily for the Shrimps it was wide. Perhaps this was the incentive that Jackson needed as seconds later he headed home the opening goal. Minutes later he nearly took a second, but Neil Thompson effected a superb saving tackle.
Jackson soon had his chance to bag another and to lay the ghost of his match with Nuneaton. Shaun Rennison mistimed his tackle on Michael Knowles and the referee awarded a penalty. Jackson showed no fear and confidently blasted the ball to the back of the net.
In the second half the Shrimps were happy to play a more relaxed and containing game, and Scarborough was unable to find any breaks. The home side introduced substitutes Alex Gildea and Stewart Morris and although Gildea had a free header, it flew over the bar to the relief of Morecambe.
The Shrimps supporters were delighted and after four minutes of injury time Jackson nearly claimed the match-ball, but Woods anticipated well but Jackson and this team mates seemed more than happy with his brace.
Team: Banks, Fensome, Hardiker, McKearney, Farrell, Burns, Knowles, Smith, Jackson, Norman, Eastwood. Subs not used: Heald, Swannick.
