LANCASTER and district are net losers in the National Lottery stakes, a new survey has revealed.
People in the district have spent £40.4 million on lottery tickets over the last five years but the area has received just £16.8 million in local awards.
The nation's biggest winner is also one of the country's wealthiest districts.
People in the borough of Westminster and the City of London spent £188m on tickets but received a staggering £1 billion in grants.
The new figures have prompted calls for lottery money to be more evenly distributed after it was revealed that causes in London received £400 million more in grants than every other city across the country put together.
Locally, big awards have been secured for the Salt Ayre swimming pool, improvements to Williamson Park, the sport centre at Lancaster & Morecambe College and the Millennium Riverside Park.
