THE prestigious Greater Manchester Youth Games are coming to Wigan for the first time.

On the third weekend in June 5,000 athletes from throughout the 10 districts of the county will descend on Robin Park to compete in 16 sports.

The 11th event is expected to attract 15,000 spectators.

Teams from all age ranges are now in training to compete in 38 competitions.

The 2000 Millennium Games marks a new era for the annual two-day event and will be the largest so far.

Games executive Richard Saunders said: "It will be a great opportunity for young athletes across the region to be introduced to Wigan's wonderful new facilities.

Chairman of Wigan's Recreation Committee, Cllr Wilf Brogan, said: " I am delighted and proud the organisers have accepted our invitation.

"Our staff at all the locations are determined to show our visitors, both young athletes and spectators, the full extent of true local hospitality.

'It restores your faith in human nature to see the way these young people behave with true competitive but always friendly rivalry."
