A BASKETBALL squad has slam-dunked a lottery grant -- to form an all women's team.
Westleigh Warriors, a mixed squad formed by the Westleigh Youth Group, recognised the need for an all girl side and has been awarded £2,500 to set one up.
"The mixed sessions have been running for two years," said Alice Jackson. "Lots of girls have shown interest, but the team is mainly made up of boys.
"Some of the young women found it difficult to train in a mixed environment and didn't stay for long. We realised it would be brilliant to have a team run just for girls by a female coach."
Community social worker Angela Cameron said: "We applied for a lottery grant and were awarded £2,500. It's fantastic. We will be able to run a girls' tournament, have away matches and provide kits.
"There is also funding available to put those interested through training to be assistant coaches, umpires, or table officials. All women aged under 18 will be welcome."
The new team will meet at Howe Bridge Sports Centre on Thursday evenings in May and June. Cost will be £1.50 with a 50p reduction per family member. The first session is free.
