CONTRARY to what Geraldine Smith seems to suggest, it is not undemocratic to express opposition to the Western Bypass.
Rather, it is undemocratic to seek to stifle the views of those with whom you disagree.
And, in the case of the bypass, those alternative standpoints which some politicians would prefer to ignore need desperately to be heard.
It strikes me as both staggering and ridiculous that whilst some local politicians question the need for a new bus station (cost: £2million), all but the Green Party appear to be in favour of a single stretch of road (cost: apparently £55million, but who believes that?).
Shouldn't we be switching these figures around? Let's have £55 million for improvements to everything but roads and leave it to those who favour the road to work out how best to spend the £2million.
They might complain, but it'd only be what pedestrians, cyclists, bus and train users have had to put up with for years!
