ECCLESTON suffered an unlikely defeat at Goodlass on Saturday.

It came after they had established a commanding position.

The Bobbies Lasne side lost the toss and were asked to bat on a slow, damp pitch.

And the batsmen had to work for every run. Opener Appleton made 11 and he was well supported by Ian Connor (19) and Karl Smith (13).

The highlight of the innings, however, was Trevor French's 21 not out. And, with Rob Creak chipping in with 11, Eccleston reached 92-8 from their allotted overs.

When Goodlass batted, wickets soon tumbled and the Liverpool side were reduced to 18-5.

But Eccleston's hopes of a speedy victory were dashed by Roberts and Gardner, who steered their side to a five-wicket success.

Pick of the Eccleston bowlers were Elliott (3-17) and Johnson (1-20).
