THE fate of a proposed taxi firm run exclusively by and for women lies in the hands of Preston Council's planning committee this month after plans came under fire from a number of residents.
Sandra Chester, secretary of Preston Hackney Carriage Association, is all set to manage Lady Kabs, which would be based on Fylde Road in Preston. Lorraine Ahmad, a freelance taxi driver, wants to set up the firm as she believes many women would be reassured by the presence of a female taxi driver.
But a number of residents are against the plans, fiercely objecting to the operation of another, six-strong fleet of cabs in a residential area because of noise.
Around 20 people have signed a petition against the plans, saying that the existing taxi firm, Ashton Taxis, in Steeple View is more than enough - they believe any more would cause necessary traffic problems. The objections have also won the support of Riversway ward councillor Alan Valentine.
Mrs Chester and Mrs Ahmed have now agreed to meet with Coun Valentine and any other dissenters to discuss their proposition and show them around the proposed firm's headquarters.
Mrs Chester said she was saddened that people were against her plans and responded to accusations of sexism when she said: "Lady Kabs will be for the benefit of those women who feel vulnerable when alone with a male driver, no matter how safe and trustworthy they may be.
"How can I be sexist when I am going to employ two male receptionists, and I have 30 male drivers working for my other firm Call 'a' Cab?"
Coun Alan Valentine said: "I don't object at all to a women-only taxi company - my concern is with the views of the residents in my ward and their worries are increased parking and noise problems in such a residential area.
"I am very much looking forward to a meeting where all the issues can be explored."
The council's decision for planning permission is expected on June 29.
