BURY'S unsung heroes and heroines have received civic approval for their unstinting devotion and dedication.
More than 80 men and women who give up their time freely to help various groups and organisations throughout the borough were feted on Tuesday (June 6).
They were guests at a special tea party and presentation organised by Bury Council for Voluntary Service (CVS), to which many local groups are attached to. Volunteers who have given 200 hours of service each received Bury CVS "thank you" certificates from the mayor, Councillor Bill Johnson, who is pictured in the back row with many of the award winners.
And students at Bury College, where the event took place, baked a "congratulations" cake to mark the occasion.
The party coincided with National Volunteers Week to pay tribute to those who provide sterling service throughout the borough.
Mrs Ine Cornall, Bury CVS volunteers organiser, said: "Although 80 received their certificates at the presentation, there were 200 volunteers who actually qualified.
"The reason for the event was two-fold. We wanted to celebrate the work of volunteers and to say a thank you for all the effort they put in.
"We also want to thank the college and the students for hosting the tea party."
On Wednesday, Bury CVS set up a stall in the town's Mill Gate centre aimed at recruiting more volunteers.
Added Mrs Cornall: "We focus on volunteers and if someone comes forward we find out what their skills and interests are and match them up with a suitable organisation."
