ABOUT 40 butchers in St Helens will need to be licensed from November 1.
The licences are being introduced nationwide following the fatal outbreak of food poisoning in Scotland and result from a public inquiry. Local butchers are being advised to apply to the council as soon as possible for the £100 licence. In addition to complying with the Food Hygiene General Regulations, butchers will also need to show they have a documented hazard analysis system.
Butchers needing further information should contact the council's Environmental Health Section (telephone 01744 456376).
