TRADERS are backing plans to build a McDonald's restaurant on land that was earmarked for a supermarket.
Shopkeepers in Rawtenstall fought a successful battle with developers Hurstwood Developments and Tesco two years ago to block their plans to build a superstore on land at Newhallhey on the outskirts of the town.
Now fast food giant McDonald's has applied to Rossendale Council for planning permission to build a restaurant on the site -- and have the backing of traders.
Tony Winder, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, said: "We have no objection to a fast food restaurant on that site, it was a supermarket we were against. I think a fast food outlet at Newhallhey would be an asset to the town and it is a shame we have had to wait so long for one."
