SO the Women's Institute were upset that Tony Blair gave a politically biased speech at their conference.
Have I missed the plot somewhere?....isn't Tony Blair our Prime Minister? The leader of the government? A politician?
What on earth did the WI expect him to talk about -- making buns?
Whether they invited him or he invited himself, is irrelevant.
The fact is that his attendance was agreed by all. If the WI had invited a sports personality -- are they seriously suggesting that they would have expected that personality to steer clear of mentioning sport? Or, what if they invited a bishop to speak ... should he be outlawed and pilloried if he discussed God? Come on!
After more than 100 years of women fighting to gain credibility, respect and equality in the decision and policy-making process and winning full participation in all strands of government and society, the Women's Institute have singularly ridiculed the intelligence, political struggle and integrity of women for women! We form 51 per cent of the world population and to hint that we do not want to be bothered with challenging political thought and action is not only nonsense, but deeply insulting.
The WI should engage in debate and attempt to touch base with its "sisters."
PAT MAUDSLEY (Women's officer, Blackburn Labour Party), Isherwood Street, Blackburn. What did
they expect?
