DID this year's London Marathon whet your appetite for a 26.2 mile challenge?

Were you hooked on the enormous rush of adrenaline and achievement that crossing the finish line brings, or were you inspired by watching it on TV, spurring you to leave the sedate comfort of your settee and attempt a lifetime's ambition?

There is no need to wait till next year. Why not join Mencap's team for the 2000 New York Marathon?

I ran my first marathon on April 16 and I can guarantee it won't be a walk in Central Park. My sprint career did not give me a head start, being overtaken by a 65-year-old woman and a man dressed as a dalmatian proved that.

But there is no point in an easy challenge and, for me, crossing that finishing line was every bit as satisfying as winning an Olympic silver medal.

So follow my motto and never doubt what you can do, especially if you have the added incentive of raising money for a really worthwhile charity. I'm committed to helping others develop and reach their full potential -- that's why I support Mencap.

Providing services from education to employment, they enable people with a learning disability to lead more enriching lives.

Mencap's NYM package includes flights, accommodation and guaranteed race entry, so all you have to concentrate on is the training and fund-raising.
