SECOND Division rivals Swindon Town are on the trail of Shakers centre back Chris Swailes.
Bury chairman Terry Robinson yesterday confirmed that the newly-relegated West Country club have made enquiries regarding the influential defender and could return with a firm offer.
Robins boss Colin Todd is known to be a big fan of the Bury stopper who was voted the fans' Player of the Season at the end of the 1998-99 campaign.
And his inability to sign another of his defensive targets, St Johnstone's Keith O'Halloran, due to the unstable financial state of the club, may persuade him to step up his move for Swailes.
The defender remains the most likely member of Andy Preece's squad to leave Gigg Lane as he, like Nick Daws, Ady Littlejohn and Chris Billy could all move on free transfers under the Bosman ruling next year.
But if Swailes goes, it would mean the club cashing in on the former Ipswich Town man who had a troubled season with injuries last term.
