I WRITE to inform you of an innovation which is making its way into our supermarkets. It is the 'British Farm Standard' logo, which will soon be recognised by all shoppers.
It was commissioned by the National Farmers Union to be easily recognisable, and shows that produce being sold is up to British Farm Standards. In order to meet these standards, the produce will have been independently checked to ensure that they meet Health and Safety, Food Hygiene and Environmental regulations. They will also have to pass an Animal Welfare test to be allowed to have the logo.
The logo is very simple and easy to spot. It is a red, white and blue tractor in the shape of the letter F, with the words 'British Farm Standard' printed in bold beneath it.
Products that will be able to carry the mark will be fresh meat products, poultry, vegetables, fruit and salads. However, provided the main ingredients qualify, we could in future see chips and peas bearing the logo.
Non-British produce will also be allowed to bear the mark. However, leading British retailers such as Sainsbury, Asda and Tesco have made it clear that they will use the mark on British produce only.
The mark will increase confidence in British produce and will be of great help to British farmers, many of whom are struggling in the international market at the moment. It will go a long way to proving that British farmed produce is quality produce.
Therefore, I encourage readers to look out for the logo and when they see it, to buy the product.
