A SERIES of proposed road schemes are set to make the town's carriageways safer.
Council bosses have given the green light for five planned traffic projects in the area to be advertised.
Before any work can be carried out all the schemes will be the subject of a public consultation exercise.
Following that work could start to introduce traffic calming measure on Holden Road, Leigh, and Edge Green Lane and Bank Street in Golborne.
There are also plans for a traffic calming scheme on Bonneywell Road, Hope Carr Road, Siddow Common and Mather Lane.
Council officials say it is still too early to say what the safety work would entail, but it is believed cycle-ways and pedestrian refuges could form part of the Holden Road scheme.
The proposals have been welcomed by Cllr Brian Jarvis, who added: "I fully support these recommendations. Anything we can do to make the roads safer for members of the public has got to be a good thing."
A traffic and transport officer for Wigan Council revealed the Holden Road scheme was one of about 30 that were flagged up after a study of past accident records.
In recent years the council have worked there way down the list, which was prioritised according to urgency.
Other planned traffic schemes which are set to go to public consultation include the scrapping of waiting restrictions on Garrett Hall Road, Astley, one-way working along Austin Street, Leigh, and extending waiting prohibitions along Derby Street, Atherton.
