PLANS for a £ million project to repair sea defences at Cleveleys look set to go ahead following a council meeting this week.
The sea wall between Victoria Road West and Jubilee Gardens is in desperate need of repair after taking a battering from the elements over the years.
Built 80 years ago the sloping aprons of the walls between the beach and the promenade are seriously damaged as is the area underneath the promenade.
Members of Wyre Council's planning committee met on Tuesday (June 13) and authorised further investigative work to look at the problems and prepare detailed design work for the necessary repairs.
Planning committee chairman Coun Alan Vincent said: "The sea defences play a vital role in the protection of Wyre's coastline. "Although there is no immediate need for concern it is important repairs and maintenance work take place as soon as possible.
"This will help ensure the sea defences continue to do the job they are meant to do and withstand the fury of the sea." It is estimated the cost of the work to repair the damage will approach £500,000 and an application for grant aid for up to 45 per cent of the costs has been made to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Wyre Council will have to provide the rest of the funding.
The studies and design work are expected to take some time and work on the repairs is likely to start early next year.
Extensive works to other areas of the sea wall at Cleveleys have already been successfully carried out.
