BURNLEY will not sign a new goalkeeper this summer as Paul Crichton continues as the established number one at Turf Moor.

The Clarets had been linked with a move for York City's former Blackburn keeper Alan Fettis.

But Stan Ternent revealed that a goalkeeper is not on his shopping list as he backs Crichton and understudy Craig Mawson to produce the goods and opts to channel his resources elsewhere.

"I am going with Crichts and young Craig," said the Burnley boss.

"I can't afford to carry another keeper on the wage bill but I am happy with Paul and I want to give Craig a chance."

After an outstanding season in helping Burnley to promotion, Crichton was certain to start the new Division One campaign as first choice between the posts. And with Ternent opting not to use a goalkeeper on the bench any new signing would be left kicking his heels waiting for a chance. That would mean a 'dead' wage and with strengthening likely to be required elsewhere in the squad, Ternent feels his budget can be better used elsewhere.

And Ternent also obviously believes that Mawson, who came on in leaps and bounds last season, can adequately fill the back-up role having agreed a new contract this summer.

That's not to say that the situation wouldn't change if things didn't work out as the season goes on.

But for now, Ternent will keep his powder dry.

"The players deserve a chance, although sentiment doesn't come into it. We have to stay in the First Division.

"If neither is good enough I will go out and get another one," he added.
