MRS Smith's letter regarding the riding of motorcycles on the Clough in Prestwich, paints a rosy picture of a group of well-dressed, organised off-road riders, who are being persecuted for participating in a harmless pursuit.
The truth is vastly different. The residents in this area have to suffer the extreme noise from these machines at all hours of the day and night. I have witnessed one particular group of quad and motocross riders who regularly roar off the Clough at high speed.
They travel without crash helmets along the main road and up to the Rainsough estate.
The lead rider of the group seems to have been given the task of directing his machine at pedestrians in order to clear the way for his companions.
I was a member of the AMCA for 12 years and competed in motocross events all over the country.
I know that reckless riders can be a danger to themselves, and am acquainted with several riders who suffered accidents while practising unaccompanied, and who lay for many hours with broken limbs until they were found.
I can assure Mrs Smith that the group she has witnessed are not responsible motocross riders.
Bylaws in Bury prohibit the use of off-road machines on the Clough, and I support the residents and visitors who have to suffer due to the inconsiderate minority who persist in this abuse.
I will do everything I am able to do to bring about an amicable solution to this nuisance.
