A BRAND new classroom aimed at bringing infant class sizes down with Government guidelines had its official opening ceremony this month (June).
Heyhouses CE Primary School, on St Annes Road East, St Annes, opened its new classroom in an effort to reduce class sizes to 30 children or under.
The classroom was officially opened by the chief executive of Lancashire Education Authority, Chris Trinick, pictured here with Alexander Rowan, 7 and Danielle Dunket, 6.
Headteacher Clive Barnes said a special assembly was held to commemorate the event.
"But it was quite ironic though in the end," said Mr Barnes.
"The children sang a song called Have You Seen Thee Golden Sunshine for him, but outside it was pouring down with rain!"
The classroom was built as an extension to the existing school building -- an old Victorian structure dating back to 1875. The room took six months to finish and cost £75,000, provided by Lancashire County Council.
Mr Barnes said he was pleased with the new space and said children are already in there getting used to the more modern surroundings.
He said: "We are absolutely delighted with the new classroom. It will be a great asset to the school and to children both now and in future generations."
