ALL that glitters may not be gold unless you're at Danny La Rue's Palladium Nights at the Pavilion Theatre which celebrates the golden age of variety with more sequins and diamante than there are stars in Danny's long showbiz memory.
Joan, Diana, Dusty, Vera, Marlene, even Dolly Levi, they're all there courtesy of the man who is determined to bring a bit of glamour back to the business after 51 years in it, pictured here taking an out-of-costume break.
Even the legendary Tiller Girls have been given a new leggy line-up in a packed programme of music and comedy that had an audience of, it has to be said the senior persuasion, swinging and singing along memory lane.
"My name's Dan and I'm a fella dressed in a frock, have you got a note?" he gently joshed a party of ladies slipping in late before launching into a comedy chat with just a touch of sauce and a little bit of politics. "All that fuss over a little stain" he said of Miss Lewinsky. "Every time I spill something on my frock I put a bead on it."
Strong support comes from crooning identical twins John and Jim Lavelle (a bit disconcerting at first -- like double vision), Beryl Johnson with what seemed to be the entire Andrew Lloyd Webber repertoire, and the fancy fiddling of violinist extraordinaire Gary Lovini who surprisingly brought the patriotic to their feet with Land of Hope and Glory after totally ruining every football fan's night by announcing England's defeat.
But Lizzie Wiggins steals the show.
Introduced as 6ft of divine glamour, the Duchess of Dudley as she is also known describes herself as little, fat and over 40 and delivers an impressive routine of down to earth humour involving the problems of husbands and undergarments while wearing a bizarre set of clashing clothes.
Palladium Nights runs at the newly refurbished Pavilion Theatre in the Winter Gardens every night except Friday until October 28 with a Wednesday matinee at 2pm.
