AN INVESTIGATION is under way following the grim discovery of a policeman's body in a burnt out car near Leyland last week.

Examinations have revealed that PC Paul Wilkinson -- dental records are the only clue to his identity -- suffered shotgun wounds to the head and a weapon had been recovered from the car.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and no-one is being sought in connection with the incident.

PC Wilkinson (pictured) left the custody office at Leyland Police Station last Thursday evening to take a meal break but failed to return.

Soon afterwards fire crews were called to his burning car in Carr Lane, Much Hoole, where they found a body.

PC Wilkinson, 37, had served as an operational officer and community constable for 12 years, working most recently at Leyland. He leaves behind his wife and two sons, aged 11 and eight.

He joined the Constabulary in February 1988 after a career as a teacher and wildlife photographer.

His superiors say his personal file illustrated his commitment to community policing.

It includes several letters of appreciation from members of the public and commendations from senior officers for his efforts in the community and in carrying out operational duties.

Chief Superintendent Paul Harry, PC Wilkinson's divisional commander, said: "This is an appalling tragedy which has shocked colleagues across the Constabulary.

"Our very deepest sympathies are with Paul's wife, sons and other family members and we will be keeping them fully informed of progress in our investigation."

An inquest in to the tragedy was opened and adjourned on Tuesday morning (June 20) at Preston and is funeral is due to take place next week.
