PLANS for a cybercafe in Lostock Hall look could be scaled up, following a recommendation by council officers to refuse the original scheme on Thursday (June 22).

Barbara Ward of Flag Lane, Penwortham, had planned to put a Portacabin in the Tardy Gate Recreation Ground, off Croston Road, in Lostock Hall, for use by local youths in the area.

But the plan faced opposition from local residents and council officers.

A report from South Ribble's planning chairman states: "The proposal would involve the inappropriate use of an area of public open space which would detract from its character and is not required to enhance the recreational or amenity value of the open space."

Residents against the plan feared the centre would lead to problems with local youths.

Now Barbara is pushing for the cafe to be situated in an abandoned supermarket in Wateringpool Lane -- and the site could be turned into a cyber centre, youth centre and community centre. She said: "We're not very happy that it's been turned down but we were already looking around for alternative premises anyway, because we knew the residents were up in arms about it.

"We met the residents about the original plan and while some had genuine concerns, others got nasty.

"We just want to get rid of problems with juvenile nuisance. We don't think we can stop it completely but we can help.

"The National Neighbourhood Watch organisation has given the scheme it's full backing.

"The old supermarket property would be ideal to situate a computer room in and there is a lot more space for a youth club with things like snooker tables.

"We could also have community rooms for people who want to do things like operate a creche or teach Morris dancing -- whatever people want."
