DR Ruth Henig, Lancaster county councillor and chairman of the Lancashire Police Authority, has received a CBE in the Queen's birthday honours' list.
The award is for services to policing.
Dr Henig, who lives in Wray, is Dean of Art and Humanities at Lancaster University and a former city councillor who has also stood for the Lancaster parliamentary seat.
She said: "While this is obviously an honour for myself, I feel it is also an important recognition of the growing contribution Police Authorities are making.
"They are not only influencing the way our police service is being run, but they also play leading roles in developing local issues such as community safety partnerships."
