KNOCKING the nests of housemartins and swallows off your home during the nest building season could prove to be costly, according to Lancashire police.
Wildlife officer PC Maria Graham revealed that the birds, their nests, eggs and chicks are protected by law and said the taking, damaging or destroying of wild bird nests, while in use, could incur a hefty fine of up to £1,000 per egg, nest or chick.
She said: "The period until late September is when housemartins and swallows return to nest.
"The birds usually return to the same area each year and have two broods of chicks.
"While most people welcome them, some may try to prevent them from nesting over doors and windows by destroying their nests -- this is an offence."
The RSPB has produced a leaflet giving practical advice on how to overcome these problems while avoiding committing an offence.
They are available by calling 01767 680551.
