THE local derby against St Helens Recs gave St Helens their first win of the season with the bowlers of both sides on top and runs at a premium.
Recs fell well short of the 142 required for victory with two hours of the match to go.
The second team also recorded a win against Orrell in the cup in an excellent game played in the usual good spirit between the clubs. Openers Jeff Gore (16) and Craig Horrobin (16) gave St Helens a good start but it was Daniel Massey's 32 which topped the scoring followed by a good finish from Ian Davies (18) and John Hill (19 not out) to set a target of 138 all out. Bullock, Massey and Fell removed one batsman each.
But it was the two Ians who won the game for St Helens. Davies with 2 -24 and McCabe with 4-20 to see off the Orrell challenge and close the innings at 129 all out.
St Helens now have to face Bootle next Sunday in the next round and with the spirit running through this team at the moment they could provide the shock of the tournament providing the long trip to Colwyn Bay next Saturday doesn't take too much of their energy.
The first team entertain Liverpool on Saturday at Windleshaw Road.
A charity walk takes place on Sunday in aid of diabetic children and the cricket club. Walkers will follow a five mile route from the club through Eccleston and arrive back, 10 pubs later, for a hot pot at 4 o'clock.
