MISS Blackpool is bigger, brighter and more beautiful than ever thanks to the input of local night spot Brannigans.

Last year saw the popular Blackpool venue take over the reins of the historical beauty competition and turn it into an event that drew more gorgeous girls than ever before with captivating local lass Caroline Porter taking the crown.

And now, in it's fiftieth year, Miss Blackpool 2000 promises to beat even last year's event with more contestants than ever before vying for a place in the glittering final on August 24 due to a more relaxed approach to entrants.

Host and compere Joey Blower explained: "After just three heats the quality of the contestants has been absolutely amazing. It's just a shame there's only one crown as they are all winners!

"The age limit has been raised this year to 30 from the usual 24 and the girl's don't have to be single or childless. Only last week a married girl won her heat to go through to the final.

"Plus things have moved on a bit from the usual sexist stereotype and the girls are asked to wear something they feel most comfortable in and are judged on personality, beauty and overall impression.

"Swimwear is also not required until the final -- just clubwear, which again has proved very popular." Five heats now remain before the grand final which had to be moved from last year's venue of the Imperial Hotel to the Empress Ballroom due to sheer numbers.

Brannigans general manager Jim McIntyre added: "We are delighted to be involved again in Miss Blackpool especially in it's 50th year and would like to thank our sponsors The Wave, Liberty's Hotel, Club Heaven and Hell, The Palace, Shalimar and Toto's Restaurant for their involvement.

"We would also love to hear from any former Miss Blackpools."

Heats take place on Thursday evenings at Brannigans from 7.30pm and hopefuls can collect an entry form from the venue or just turn up on the night.

The contest will be followed by the usual Thursday night fun and frolics with live bands, special appearances and drink offers.

Two winners from each heat are entered in the final which includes free accommodation at Liberty's, a tour of Blackpool's nightlife and dinner in a top local restaurant the night before for all contestants.

And Miss Blackpool 2000 will scoop a £1000 cash prize along with her crown. For further details contact Brannigans on (01253) 752277.
