Mid Lancs track and field meeting at Seedhill Athletics Track, Nelson

YOUNG Sally Targett was the pick of the Pendle athletes at the weekend when she produced one of her best performances of the season to storm to success in the individual and relay sprint finals.

The under 15s sprinter was unstoppable as she won both the 100 and 200 metres finals -- producing her best ever time in the 200m final.

Targett was also a member of the winning Pendle Athletics Club 4x100 relay team along with Sarah Isherwood, Nikala Smith and Samantha White who won in 54.4 seconds.

Targett won the 100m in 13.00 secs before her best ever time of 26.9 secs in the 200m final.

It was a good day for Pendle sprinters in this age group as Smith finished as runner-up in the 100m in 13.6 secs while White was just behind Targett in the 200m in 27.4 secs.

Relay team member Isherwood also had a successful day as she produced personal bests in three different events; 200m (13.6 secs), 800m (2 mins 41.9 secs) and javelin (7.86m).

While Targett was Pendle's top performer, there were other athletes who produced outstanding performances.

Lisa Ashworth had a good day in the under 17s section when she won the 200m in 27.6 secs and was second in the 300m in 43.8 secs. Laura Dunlop was another to pick up three personal bests in the 300m (47.8 secs), high jump (1.43m) and the javelin, where her throw of 29.51m was good enough to win.

Louisa Holt achieved a personal best in the 800m with a run of 3 mins 01.5 secs.

In the senior women there were victories for Vicky Gorton and Ruth Thompson. Gorton won the discus with a throw of 32.98m while Thompson won the 800m in 2 min 33 secs and was second in the shot put with a throw of 8.29m. Vicky Haydock finished in second place in the discus with a throw of 29.80m and Fiona Corrigan was second in the 400m with a personal best time of 63.3 secs. The pick of the under 13 girls were Kate Walker, Kate Halley and Emma Hargreaves who all achieved personal bests. Walker finished third in the 800m in 2 min 37.3 secs, Halley's 31.7 secs was her best time in the 200m while Hargreaves also achieved her best time of 32.9 secs in the same event.

The boys and mens teams also had a good day. In the under 13s section, Joshua Sinclair won the shot put with a throw of 7.30m while he was third in the long jump with a leap of 4.27m.

In the under 15s, David Lowe had a consistent day when he finished second in both the 800m and the high jump. Fellow middle distant runner Tony Roscoe also did well when he was third in the 1500m.

David and John Riley were the star performers for the under 17s when they won the 3,000m and 800m respectively. David was first in the 3000m in 10 min 03.9 secs while John crossed the line first in the 800m in 2 min 09.2 secs.

The men did not pick up any first places but there were still plenty of top three finishes.

Michael Hunt was second in the 400m and third in the 800m, just behind team-mate Bryce Butterworth. Nicky Taylor picked up two third places in the 100m and 200m while Tony Balko was third in the shot put.

As expected Pendle had the biggest turn out on the day but other East Lancashire clubs also took part in the Seedhill meeting.

Hyndburn sent a small team but under 13s star Anna Griffiths was their best performer as she won both the 200m and high jump and was second in the 100m.

Saira Shahid was third in the under 15s javelin while Claire Mitchell produced a personal best in the same event with a throw of 17.03m.

In the under 17s section, Laura Munns was second in the discus and third in the 100m while Casey Dean was second in the long jump senior event.

There was some good performances in the boys under 17s where Mark Griffiths was second in the discus and shot put, with Joe Madigan just behind in both events.

Paul Sockett was third in the long jump. Blackburn Harriers also sent a small team and their success came in the senior men's middle distance events.

Glenn Garrett won the 800m while Michael Hammer and Scott Monk finished first and second in the 1500m.

In the junior events, Anthony Morgan achieved a personal best in the under 15s high jump with a leap of 1.40m.

Sarah Blackburn was third in the under 15s 800m while the Hamilton sisters Carrie and Candy did well in their respective under 17s and under 13s events where they finished third in the 800m. Clare Critchley was fourth in the under 13s 200m.
