M66: Celebrating its silver anniversary in 2000 is Bury's M66 motorway. The 4.8k link between Simister and Heap Bridge was officially opened in 1975 by Mr Leonard Fairclough, president of the construction company which built the new easterly by-pass.
CLASSIC: The Classic Cinema in Market Street re-opened this week after being converted into two cinemas.
UNFARE: Bus passengers in Bury were quick to comment about the massive increases in fares. Most faced local rises of anything between 1p and 7p and comments ranged from "ridiculous" to "criminal". The only section of the travelling public who were not too displeased were pensioners whose former 2p fare had risen by 100 per cent to 4p.
SEASON: Bury made a fine start to their three match pre-season tour of Scotland when they were comfortable winners against Clydebank. On a day more suited to sun-bathing the Shakers always hadcontrol of the game and the reward for their hard work under energy-sapping conditions was a winning goal in the first half from George Hamstead.
FIREMEN: Bury firefighters took part in an 11-week national demonstration in support of better conditions, short hours and fulfilment of an old pay agreement. Firemen throughout the country were complying with union directives. No appliances would turn out without an agreed manning level, drill periods were cancelled, detached duties banned and all training courses suspended.
