A WORKMAN has been killed in a building site accident in Fulwood.
Andrew Jacques, 37, from Heywood, Manchester, was working on site at Longsands Lane when the gable end of a building under construction collapsed.
A team of eight men were working on a shopping complex at the back of the Anderton Arms pub around midday when the tragedy struck.
Initial reports suggested another workman was also trapped under rubble, but as the emergency services arrived all the other workmen were accounted for.
The North West air ambulance was called to the scene, but the worker was pronounced dead at the scene by Med-Alert doctors.
Representatives from the Health and Safety Executive were at the site investigating the accident.
Roger Kendrick, from the HSE, said: "This is a real tragedy. We are trying to find out exactly what happened and how it happened.
"We have finished examining the site on Tuesday evening (August 1) and an investigation is now under way which could take anything up to a year."
Inspector Ian Pilling, from Preston police, added: "We are working closely with the Health and Safety Executive at this time to establish the facts.
"In due course, interviews will be held with all the workmen concerned to try and piece together the cause of this accident."
