EUROPEAN funds for subsidised school milk are to continue -- thanks to the efforts of Euro MP, Terry Wynn, whose constituency includes St Helens.
Following discussions with the European Commission and the 15 Finance Ministers, the decision to maintain the £40 million subsidies will continue. The proposal from the Commission was to cut it by almost a half, but following Terry Wynn's intervention with the French Presidency of the Council and the UK Government the decision was overturned.
"It means that those schools in the North West who claim the subsidy will continue to do so," said Terry. "The sad fact is that not all schools use it because it's easier to install Coke machines. I have discussed with the NFU that dairy farmers in places like the North West should be encouraging schools to introduce school milk.
"It would be good for the children and good for farmers in our region," he added.
