HIDDEN historic treasures are now on display at Astley Hall Museum in Chorley.
The new exhibition, "Treasures for Keeps", will run until September 3 and will focus on those items which are so delicate that they are usually kept out of harms way.
They will include rarely seen Victorian dresses, costumes and other textiles.
Museum curator Nigel Wright said: "A major theme of the exhibition is conservation and how the museum minimises damage to the objects in its care.
"For the example the harmful effects of too much light, too much moisture and the problems of dirt and dust are examined, as well as an in-depth look at some of the creepy-crawlies which can damage objects."
As well as displaying some of the museum's treasures, staff are keen to find out about the public's own precious things.
Nigel added: " We want to discover what objects people would like to see preserved and why. They could be quite ordinary but may have special meaning to their owners."
Local people are encouraged to send in photographs of their precious things, to be displayed on a wall at the museum.
Chorley Council chief executive member for community services, Councillor Mary Wilson added: "This exhibition gives everyone the chance not just to look at things but also be a part of the event and I hope that the public will take up that opportunity."
