St Patrick's 0, Rovers 2

ROCK star David Gray may have stolen the show at the Witnness Music Festival in Dublin on Saturday night.

But across town at Richmond Park it was Matt Jansen who struck all the right notes to ensure Rovers' wrapped up their pre-season preparations with another morale-boosting victory.

As Gray belted out his smash hit 'Babylon' to the great delight of 33,000 music fans, Jansen belted home another scintillating strike to light up this stroll in the park for Graeme Souness's men.

And, if the 22-year-old striker continues in this vein over the next 10 months, then he could be the man to lead Rovers to promotion.

In the space of a week Jansen has already conjured up two contenders for goal of the season.

Last weekend, he triggered Everton's downfall with a stunning right-footer which rocketed past a startled Paul Gerrard.

This time, the former Crystal Palace man took aim with his lethal left-foot before bending an unstoppable effort past a helpless Seamus Kelly.

Christian Dailly -- Rovers' other scorer in this 2-0 cakewalk -- was among those raving about Jansen's latest gem on the final whistle.

And now he hopes the England Under 21 international can take his 'friendly form' into the League season proper.

"He's been looking brilliant in pre-season and it's great to see players like him playing with such confidence," said Dailly.

"He's got a great strike on him when he lets rip like that.

"It's great for us at the back to see someone like him doing that up-front.

"And long may it continue when the season gets going proper."

Jansen's wonder-strike was the icing on the cake in another encouraging display by the First Division promotion favourites.

St Pat's had little to offer in a one-sided first half as Rovers threatened a rout thanks to some neat approach play.

A flurry of substitutions meant they never scaled the same heights after the break as Souness took one last chance to tinker before the big kick-off next weekend. But there's no denying Rovers' now look a more hungry and well-balanced side than the one that limped through last season.

And whatever the standard of opposition over the summer, four wins from six games can only boost confidence ahead of the serious stuff -- which is the whole point of these matches in the first place.

There was only one team in it in the opening 45 minutes.

Home keeper Seamus Kelly had already made a smart stop to foil Nathan Blake before Rovers took the lead on 14 minutes.

David Dunn was the architect, feeding Dailly in the box after some slick play on the left, and the Scottish international rolled a defender before firing home.

Kelly then denied Jansen and the Rovers striker missed another golden opportunity when he headed wide from a Stig Bjornebye centre.

But it wasn't long before he made amends and, when he did, it was a strike to savour.

Blake flicked on a through ball which Jansen latched onto in a flash and he shrugged off the attentions of a defender before beating Kelly with an exquisite effort from the edge of the box.

Rovers' slick approach play carved out further chances for Dunn and Blake.

But a mixture of wayward finishing and inspired keeping meant they failed to extend their advantage before the break.

Rovers' rhythm was interrupted by a succession of substitutions during a fairly uneventful second half.

But Blake and Duff were both guilty of howling misses on a couple of occasions when the St Pat's rearguard was breached.

Nevertheless, it was a worthwhile exercise apart from Alan Kelly's injury -- sustained in a mid-air collision with Colm Foley.

"It's been as good a pre-season as I've been involved in," said Dailly.
