BRIERFIELD'S first town Fun Day became an immediate multicultural hit.
The event, put together when Brierfield Gala collapsed, drew strong support from all sections of the local community -- providing an array of attractions with something for everyone. It was the culmination of busy months of effort after the depleted gala committee decided it simply had not the numbers to organise and stage the annual show. It was then that Brierfield arts and cultural officer Marie Davies suggested to gala chairman David Saville that a fun day based around the town's youth club and community centre could fill the social void.
It was an idea which worked as a steady flow of people came to see the attractions and enjoy the day-long fun events. Kids loved the circus workshop and flocked to the mini-funfair, while buyers roamed around the flea market. There was stick dancing shows from Brierfield's own Asian Girls' Group, line-dancing with the Cactus group and music from the Manchester School of Samba.
Mr Saville was delighted with the support and by the fact that the weather held up to help bring success. The new committee -- still a very small band -- will now consider the future, but Mr Saville says: " I would be very happy if we did this again next year."
