THE grim weather of last week set the tone for Walmer's league results, with only light relief for the mixed B team.
The mixed A squad were visitors to Hawkshaw B in Division Two, and got off to a negative start in the mixed section. Sole victors were Mark Booth and Lisa Morley at 6.3, with reverses recorded by Mike Davies and Pat Greening, 5-6, Andy Foster and Zara Chadowic, 4-6, and Steve Routledge and Gail Blackburn. Lisa and Gail shared improved form in winning their ladies sets 6-5, 6-4. Pat and Zara were losers by 4-6, 3-6.
The margin of which Walmer trailed was increased as Davies and Foster scored 6-3, 4-6, and Routledge and Booth went down by 4-6, 1-6. This latest reverse leaves Walmer A with a lot of work over the few remaining matches to ensure they maintain their Division Two status. Result 49-58.
The Mixed B team were handed the points in their match with Meadow Hill with a walkover.
Walmer Mixed C have become the club's "nearly'' team with a series of narrow defeats to date and Tuesday saw yet another example. Mark Booth and Fiona McKernan were the only pair to win in the mixed at 6-3, with Keith Fairhurst and Lucy Hargreaves and Pete Duckworth with Rebecca Vipond losing 4-6 each, and a 1-6 reverse by Stuart Duress and Lucy Wright.
Walmer's best spell came from Fairhurst and Booth who won 6-1, 6-2 and Fiona McKernan and Rebecca Vipond won a set by 6-4, but overall the team didn't make the most of their chances. On too occasions Walmer's C have dominated rallies only to lose out with unforced errors, and the losing margin of just eight games, reflected how important it is to keep concentration to win matches.
The Men's league was badly affected by the heavy rain, but the A team completed their match, losing by 1-8 to Holcombe Brook in failing light and threatening rain. The C team also at home, played in heavy weather before surrendering to visitors Lowton B by 5-3.
The matches of thew Men's B & D teams were both abandoned, without a result.
